Barbatos (バルバトス, Barubatosu) is Muu Alexius's Djinn. He is a Strength Djinn and the Djinn of Hunting (狩猟, Shuryō) and Nobility (高潔, Kōketsu). Barbatos was found in the 8th Dungeon. He was the chief of the unknown other species tribe, the tribe of Hunting and Nobility.

Unlike other Djinns, his current Dungeon Capturer's highly limited Magoi prevents the complete manifestation of Barbatos, only applying the minimum Full Djinn Equip.

Appearance[]

Barbatos with Paimon and Leraje

Pre-Djinn Barbatos with Paimon and Leraje.

Pre-Djinn Humanoid Form[]

His Pre-Djinn humanoid form could be seen in a flashback of Alma Torran when Solomon was the newly crowned King who united the world. Barbatos is a muscular man with healthy skin and a furry long tail. He has wild, spiky silvery-white hair with the back being elongating to his back. He wears thick necklace frontally connected to a thick jeweled belt, long simple earrings, and bangles, a thick one on both wrists and distinct ornamental thin ones on both forearms at the intersect of his shoulders and biceps. He also wears a cloth that covers his lower body, down to the thighs. As the chief of his tribe, he holds a degraded Divine Staff in his left hand, which also acts as his javelin.[1][2]

After the rise of Al-Thamen, Barbatos became a Djinn to fight the Medium and opened his 8th underground city "Barbatos" for many survivors. During the fight with Al-Thamen, the Pre-Djinn Barbatos also wore a cloth that is draped around the left shoulder and bound by his same metal belt to met Solomon's call.[3]

As a member of the other species tribe, the tribe of Hunting and Nobility, he possesses their unique leg structure: feline-like lower legs with hairless three-toed feet and flexible ankles with 180 degree hinge joints. He also follows the custom of being barefoot.

Overall, Pre-Djinn Barbatos has a height half a head taller than Focalor, but Solomon only reaches his diaphragm.[4][3]

In the Magi (anime), Barbatos has dark brown hair and tanned skin on a muscular body. He wears short gold earrings, a thick gold necklace and a gold armband around his left forearm. Only a piece of white cloth, tied to the waist, is worn on his lower body. However, Barbatos does not carry a Divine Staff.[5] He has a different gold necklace at a later appearance.[6]

Djinn Form[]

His Djinn form can be seen as a silhouette when Djinn Equip Muu executes Bard Romh to attack Aladdin. Barbatos is an extremely muscular and burly humanoid (dark tanned complexion...) with longer spiky silvery-white hair, pointed ears, long fingernails, and a tail. There is also hair all along his arms, and what appear to be small wings on his legs. His legs themselves are wrapped in a silvery flexible armor with pairs of feathers on his knees and ankles. Only, his legs are physically structured as a hybrid of human and animal, possessing three clawed toes and 180 degree flexible ankles. He wears his previous thick necklace, earrings, and bangles (or not when appearing initially as part of Bard Romh). He wears a cloth around his waist. He has a somewhat crazed expression. Like all the Djinn, Barbatos has a third eye in his forehead, but his uniqueness is a pair of feathered wings extending from both sides of it.

Notably, Barbatos possesses silvery armor that only covers his legs from below his waist, leaving white silky fur to cover his lower nakedness, hidden by his loose cloth.

Personality[]

Pre-Djinn[]

Barbatos conducted with responsibility when the needs arise as the chief of the Tribe of Hunting and Nobility. In his amiable relationships, he is very casual. At the time of Solomon's physical death and rise of Al-Thamen, Barbatos still entrusted himself to Solomon to protect the world and the future of his tribe, therefore, voluntarily become a Djinn.

Djinn[]

Due to his indefinite period over 1,000 years, Barbatos gradually lost his mortal morality in his loneliness He also became a war-loving spearmaster to pass the time in the lifeless Alma Torran. This borders ADHD. He prefers direct martial confrontation instead of intellectual magic, evident towards his application of Strength Magic.

History[]

Barbatos used to live in Alma Torran and was part of King Solomon's Household. He was the chief of the other species tribe, the tribe of Hunting and Nobility.

Barbatos, along with the rest of the Djinn, were created by King Solomon from Rukh to protect the world.

Barbatos and the other Djinn willingly stayed in Alma Torran alone to help establish the Magi system at Ugo's request.

By the era of the International Alliance, Barbatos, along with the rest of the Djinn, have mostly given up on the Magi system and do not want to return to their Dungeons after the death of their dungeon capturer.

Plot[]

Magnostadt Arc[]

Barbatos, unnamed, appears in Aladdin's Alma Torran memories provided by the Wisdom of Solomon. They partially depict King Solomon's coronation day.[4]

Bard Romh

Barbatos, unseen, is introduced as the Djinn of Hunting and Nobility as well as the controller of the 8th Dungeon. During Muu Alexius using Bard Romh, Barbatos appears as a enlarged background silhouette with synchronized motions.[7]

Alma Torran Arc[]

Night 227

Night 227: Bottom - Side View - Barbatos

Barbatos is one of chiefs of the many other species tribes, the tribe of Hunting and Nobility.[8] He appears as a chief of his other species tribe and a member of Solomon's Household to attend the sendoff of Solomon's group to fight David Jehoahaz Abraham at the Orthodox Church headquarters.[9]

With Solomon's choice to seal Ill Ilah in another dimension, the Divine Staff become degraded to possess only limit magic types. It became obsolete for the other species Barbatos to use, except as a javelin.[10]

Barbatos appears as a member of King Solomon's Household on the day of his coronation. The smiling him initially appears behinds Amon, who attempts to congratulate their King in tears. Barbatos then comforts a sulking Leraje to give up on her crush for the playboy Focalor, with Paimon's assistance.[1][2] On the same day, Barbatos and other chiefs of their tribes receive one of the 72 Metal Vessels to enable them all equal in power with the vessels' stored powerful magic among themselves and to establish independent underground city for their species.[11] The Metal Vessel enabled Barbatos the power to use his Strength magic again.

With his Divine Staff in his right hand and carrying his Metal Vessel, Barbatos and the other Household members were called by their King when Al-Thamen rose to end their world.[3] He and the other chiefs willingly became Djinn through the power of the Metal Vessel and Solomon's magic.[12] However, while the Medium was successfully pushed back, the surface of Alma Torran became inhabitable, therefore, Barbatos and other Djinn open their underground cities, their Dungeons, to the survivors and used their Metal Vessels to contribute to shared resources.[13]

Barbatos later appears as the Djinn of the 8th underground city, "Barbatos", to comment about the Amon-Zagan master-disciple rivalry with the visiting Ugo and Sheba's unborn son, Aladdin.[14] With the great migration of Alma Torran's inhabitants to Solomon's created world, Barbatos stayed alone with the other Djinn in their "Dungeons" to be the guardians of their Metal Vessels. They held hope and belief their sacrifice for the Magi system would be the best for their descendants' futures so to prosper in the New World.[15]

Final Arc[]

Because Muu is affiliated with the International Alliance, the Metal Vessel of Barbatos should be locked up with Sinbad. However, because the Rem Empire will face offense from the international terrorist, Nerva Julius Caluades and his Djinn Shax, Muu has the chance to keep Barbatos until the matter is resolved.[16]

Muu's Djinn Equip is featured in Sinbad's probable resulting simulated image to have the plan of concentrating all Djinn Equip Extreme Magics into 1 vessel.[17] Barbatos indirectly allows his multiplied 8th Dungeon to be destroyed by Muu's group to prevent David's plot to decay all things back to the Rukh.[18] His Dungeon Capturer then applies his Extreme Magic Bard Longineus energy into Alibaba Saluja.

Abilities[]

Strength Control

Barbatos has the ability to control the 7th type of Magic, Strength/Power.

Wand

As a Pre-Djinn and an other species of Alma Torran, Barbatos previously wielded a modified Divine Staff, one in the shape of a three-pronged javelin. His enabled the initial use the 7th type of Magic. After Solomon's choice to seal Ill Ilah, his Divine Staff lost its function and Barbatos later receives one of the 72 Metal Vessels created by Ugo and Sheba, reenabling Barbatos his Strength magic.

Dungeon Capturer[]

Household Member[]

The known members of Barbatos' Household are Myron Alexius, Muu's younger sister, and Lo'lo'. They are Fanalis Corps members.

Metal Vessel[]

Barbatos' Metal Vessel is the sword that Muu carries with him. It is able to produce shock waves using Strength Magic that are able to fly to far distances. These shock waves can come in the form of whatever attack is used for eg. if a punch is used, the shock waves would look like a bullet but if a sword was used it would like like a slash of compressed air sailing towards the target. Each shock wave is easily capable of breaking a Borg and severely damaging the Magician.

Djinn Equip[]

Spirit of Hunting and Nobility. I command thee...Be clad in my body. Dwell in my body. Change my body into a great Djinn, Barbatos!!!

—Muu, summoning the powers of Barbatos, entering Djinn Equip

Muu's Djinn Equip appearance is that of a lion, a feline. His hair becomes a long silver mane with two metal hair clips holding two bangs at the front, he has pointed feline ears, and feline-like feet covered in armor over the lower half of his body with wings at his ankles. He also gets a pair of wristbands connected to a pair of armbands by chains.

In this form, similar to a cheetah before running, his feline legs acts like a spring to increase his speed and power making him capable of crossing massive distances in an instant. They compare this to his body becoming a sword capable of breaking through anything.

It's been stated that Muu has a low quantity of Magoi since he's a Fanalis, therefore, his Djinn Equip lasts no more than one minute and cannot display the complete appearance of Barbatos. Although he might have more Magoi than the other Fanalis and Semi-Fanalis since he was able to conquer a Dungeon. This low Magoi quantity restricts him expressing a complete appearance of Barbatos manifesting during a full Djinn Equip, noticeably the metal ornaments.

Djinn Weapon Equip[]

He compresses Barbatos' Strength magic around his Weapon changing it into a javelin. This javelin is capable of easily breaking through rocks and barriers in an instant with only a thrust.

  • Bard Romh (バルバトスの槍剣バルド・ロムフ, Barudo.Romufu, Barbatos' Javelin): It is able to produce shock waves using Strength Magic that are able to fly to far distances. These shock waves can come in the form of whatever attack is used for (eg. if a punch is used, the shock waves would look like a bullet, but if a sword was used it would be like a slash of compressed air sailing towards the target). Each shock wave is easily capable of breaking a Borg of a Magician and severely damaging them.
  • Bard Longineus: The Dungeon Capturer's Extreme Magic of Barbatos. It takes the form of a huge sword made of blue light. Considering that Muu was far from Magnostadt when he tried to use this spell, it can be assumed that it was capable of destroying the city even from a long range. However, the full effects were not seen, since the spell was stopped by Alibaba.

Author's Twitter Blog Rough Draft

  • Shinobu Ohtaka drew some of the Djinn in human form on her blog. Those currently identified are Barbatos, Focalor, Amon, Paimon, Zepar, and Zagan.
  • With his Djinn Equip, Barbatos is nicknamed by Alibaba as Shiny Silver「銀ピカ」.
  • His name is probably taken from the book The Lesser Key of Solomon. In the first section of this book, entitled Ars Goetia, several demons are described, Barbatos being the eighth. As a matter of fact, the dungeon where Barbatos resided was the 8th as well. Barbatos has a seal corresponding to the same Barbatos in the The Lesser Key of Solomon.
  • In other translations, Barbatos in Simplified Chinese: 巴巴托斯 (Bābātuōsī) and Korean: 바르바토스 (baleubatoseu).
